Fluid logistics: when flow excellence reaches the warehouse

Before the ONO installation, FITT managed its entire logistics operations on static racking, with a manual approach that could no longer support the volumes and complexity demanded by a rapidly growing e-commerce business.

The requirement was clear: to structure a logistics flow capable of managing the entire chain automatically — from goods receipt from production, to e-commerce order preparation, through to courier collection — with the ability to scale in the future without disrupting existing flows.

ONO Lean Logistics designed a tailor-made solution: an automated system standing 12 metres tall, installed outside the production building, capable of simultaneously managing inbound raw product inventory and prepared product ready for shipment. A solution designed to maximise operational efficiency across multiple levels — quite literally.

The solution installed at FITT stands out for the sophistication and elegance of its operational flow, developed across two levels of the building with a system that coordinates them seamlessly and automatically.

Ground floor — Inbound: goods arriving from production are loaded directly into the External Front Bay on the ground floor. Operators enter single-SKU boxes into the system exactly as they arrive from production — the ONO system handles automated storage in the most appropriate tray.

First floor — Picking and Packing: on the first floor, operators access the External Front Bay to retrieve the products required for e-commerce order preparation. The flow involves picking the raw product, creating the shipping parcel according to the customer order (packing) and returning the prepared parcel to the ONO system — all within approximately 2 metres: the operator picks, prepares and reloads, without ever leaving the workstation.

As a result, two types of inventory coexist within the ONO automated system:

• Raw product: the incoming material from production, awaiting preparation.
• Prepared product: parcels ready for shipment, awaiting courier collection.

Operations on the two levels take place independently and simultaneously, with no interference between the loading flow and the order preparation flow. An operator on the first floor can work on picking while new goods are being loaded on the ground floor — the system coordinates everything.

The most distinctive feature of this installation is the External Side Bay (ONO|BLE), designed to make goods collection by couriers entirely autonomous — without them needing to access internal departments or interact with the shipping office.

The ONO|BLE is protected by a dedicated enclosure, accessible via a roller shutter with keypad authentication. The flow is fully automated:

• The courier receives a temporary access code on their smartphone.
• The code unlocks the roller shutter and the sectional door.
• The tray containing the parcels for collection arrives automatically at the bay.
• The courier digitally signs the delivery note on the ONO|UI interface.
• Collection is complete — the courier leaves without any further steps.

This solution makes the courier delivery process fully autonomous and traceable, freeing internal staff to focus on higher value-added activities while reducing waiting times and delivery errors.

The ONO installation at FITT is supported by deep IT integration with the company's digital platforms, covering both the sales and logistics sides of the chain.

FITT manages its e-commerce operations across multiple sales platforms — a common scenario for companies operating on multiple channels (marketplaces, own websites, online retailers). An aggregator platform channels all orders from the various sources into a single management portal. Downstream, ShippyPro handles the coordination of the different couriers, ensuring unified shipment management.

The integrated flow works as follows:

• The e-commerce platform automatically sends the order to FITT's ERP.
• The ERP transmits the order to the ONO system, which handles picking, preparation and packing.
• Once the parcel is created, ONO transmits its dimensions to the ERP.
• The ERP automatically books the courier collection via ShippyPro, with the parcel specifications.
• The courier arrives at the ONO|BLE and collects the goods autonomously.

The result is an end-to-end process in which manual intervention is kept to a minimum and every step is tracked and coordinated across systems.

Completing the flow, FITT uses ONO|EXTERNAL — the ONO Lean Logistics WMS — to manage goods stored on static racking as well. Thanks to shared lists between the two warehouse areas, the system sequentially coordinates picking from the automated section and from the racking, through to packing management and the transmission of information to the ERP for courier booking. A further layer of integration that extends ONO's control across the entire warehouse flow, both automated and static.

One of the aspects that guided FITT's choice of ONO is the system's ability to grow without disrupting existing flows.

The current system was designed with future expansion in mind. Should FITT decide to increase the volumes handled, it could extend the system in depth across the external yard, doubling storage capacity while keeping the current bays and operational flows unchanged. No interruption to operations, no layout redesign.

This is the concrete meaning of an ONO system: not just flexibility in the initial project, but freedom to grow over time.
